Sun Damage and Brown Spots/Pigment Treatment

There is no such thing as a “healthy tan”. You may know that now, but sun damage may have already occurred. Sun damage, or photoaging, causes accelerated development of fine lines and wrinkles, brown spots, loose skin or a” blotchy” complexion, which can all be magnified as you age.

Are There Solutions?

Oh, yes.

Advanced Dermatology helps you fight the visible signs of sun damage with a variety of progressive techniques including topical medications, microdermabrasion and dermabrasion, injectable treatments, and chemical peels. For more dramatic results, we offer skin resurfacing treatments using intense pulsed light, radiofrequency energy and laser technology.

What Causes Brown Spots?

Blotchy dark spots can be caused by sun exposure over time, inflammation, certain medications (including hormones) or genetics. Generally, a brown spot is a focal area of either a higher number of pigment cells (called “melanocytes”) or an increased number of pigment molecules (called “melanin”) located within the melanocyte.

Excess melanin resides in your epidermis – the top layer of your skin — and deeper, in your dermis, making these brown spots a diverse group of skin issues to treat – not a “one size fits all” approach. Different types of increased pigmentation require different treatments.

Brown Spot Removal

Brown Spot Removal

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), is a safe, effective in-office treatment requiring no anesthesia, which removes brown spots and patches from your skin by selectively targeting melanin and melanocytes, leaving the other cells in your skin untouched.

Unlike lasers, the IPL device was created to treat combinations of skin issues. The goal of IPL treatments, usually performed as a series, is to decrease the irregular brown and red areas that have developed as a result of aging and sun damage. They brighten the skin, giving it a more youthful appearance.

Fine Control, Great Results

IPL treatments deliver a broad range of colors of light to treat multiple skin conditions occurring in larger areas. Filters are used to selectively deliver light in various wavelengths to different layers (and depths) of the skin to treat specific conditions. We can adjust and control the setting and wavelength to best target your brown spots or redness on the face, neck, chest, arms and legs.

Treatments take 15 to 30 minutes, and there are no needles. Skin may be red and feel mildly sunburned for a few hours after your procedure.  You can resume normal activities immediately following treatment. The dark spots will often darken after the treatment, almost appearing as “coffee grounds”. These may be covered easily with makeup so there is minimal social downtime.

The darkening may last for up to three weeks, then fade and flake off. Over the course of treatment, you will see noticeable improvements in your skin’s discolorations, texture, and overall appearance. Your Advanced Dermatology professional will recommend a proper skin care regimen to maintain your results.

Treatments that smooth the texture of the skin (“skin resurfacing”) can also decrease brown spots. Each type of treatment focuses on different combinations of skin issues. Some work for more superficial freckles. Others are more effective for deeper pigment like melasma.

To diminish brown spots, tighten skin and give your face a more youthful glow, consult with your Advanced Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery specialist in brown spots and skin damage for a solution that will work best for you and your skin.
