Dr. James A. Solomon, the Director of Ameriderm Research, earned his Bachelor of Arts from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland; his Ph.D. in Immunology from SUNY Upstate Medical Center, Syracuse, New York; and his M.D. from SUNY Buffalo, Buffalo, New York. He completed research fellowships at Roswell Park Memorial Institute, Buffalo, NY as well as at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts. He completed his residency training in Boston, Massachusetts: Pathology at the Mallory Institute of Pathology, Boston City Hospital; Pediatrics at Tufts New England Medical Center; and Dermatology at the combined Boston University/Tufts University Residency program. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Dermatology and a Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology.

Prior to his current position as Director of Ameriderm Research, Dr. Solomon’s career included a tenure as a full time Assistant Professor at Boston University Department of Dermatology; the Director of the Dermatology Department of a Massachusetts Blue Cross HMO; a solo practitioner of medical and cosmetic dermatology in Massachusetts for 17 years; and as a hospital based medical and cosmetic dermatologist in Illinois. During this time, he maintained academic associations with Tufts Medical School, University of Illinois, and Southern Illinois University and continued being involved in clinical research. He has been an active member of multiple medical societies including serving on several committees. These include the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), Massachusetts Medical Society, Illinois Medical Society, Volusia County Medical Society; American Hair Research Society; American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery, Society for Investigative Dermatology, Association of Clinical Research Professionals, and Society of Clinical Research Associates, American Dermatoepidemiology Network (ADEN), Dermatoepidemiology Expert Resource Group of AAD (DermEpi ERG), International Dermatoepidemiology Association (IDEA), International Dermatology Outcome Measures (IDEOM), and Group for Research and Assessment of Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis (GRAPPA).

As Director of Ameriderm Research, Dr. Solomon is in charge of creating and establishing a new academic research model. The goal of Ameriderm Research is to make available the latest clinical trials for both drugs and devices to dermatology patients within the large dermatology patient population (>1.5 million) of Advanced Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery as well as to those in the communities surrounding the 150+ offices of ADCS. Ameriderm Research currently has five clinical trial sites in three states and which participate in multiple Phase I-IV clinical trials including studies that are enrolling, ongoing but not enrolling, and in extension status. Ameriderm Research is in the process of expanding its presence throughout the US. Ameriderm Research performs pharmaceutical and device company initiated clinical trials for dermatological diseases including: Actinic Keratosis, Advanced Basal Cell Carcinoma, Basal Cell Carcinoma Nevus Syndrome, Squamous Cell Carcinoma, Melanoma; Cosmetic Dermatology, Acne scarring; Acne Vulgaris, Rosacea, Atopic Dermatitis, Chronic Hand Eczema, Hidradenitis Suppurativa, Psoriasis; Pediculosis Capitis, Tinea Pedis, Onychomycosis; Alopecia Areata, and Pattern Alopecia.

Dr. Solomon maintains four academic appointments: Professor of Dermatology at University of Central Florida College of Medicine, Florida State University College of Medicine, Kansas City University of Medicine and Bioscience; as well as Assistant Clinical Professor, Dermatology at University of Illinois College of Medicine. Dr. Solomon’s role at UCF COM included being an active member of the curriculum committee that helped launch the UCF College of Medicine. Through these professorships, Dr. Solomon teaches and mentors medical students and residents in dermatology and dermatologic clinical research. Moreover, he has several ongoing basic clinical research collaborations with these as well as several other academic centers throughout the US. A current collaboration with University of IL, University of Rochester, Clemson University and University of Colorado focuses on the use of supercomputers, the internet and social media to help understand the patient perspective across the globe of as well as personal and environmental factors affecting disease.

As a result of these research projects, Dr. Solomon has over 125 publications and presentations. The research has been presented at multiple international meetings held within the US and Europe. Publications have included one article published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) concerning the treatment with vismodigeb of locally advanced and metastatic basal cell carcinoma. Several others have been published in the Journal of the America Academy of Dermatology (JAAD), Cutis, JAMA-Derm and other renowned dermatology journals.

Dr. Solomon actively works on committees and projects with multiple patient advocacy groups, including the National Alopecia Areata Foundation and the Basal Cell Carcinoma Nevus Life Support Network. He competed the Uniform Protocol Project of the National Alopecia Areata Foundation (NAAF) which is being used by NAAF to facilitate initiating clinical treatment development projects at pharmaceutical companies. This was a precedence setting project wherein a patient advocacy group has gained FDA support to draft uniform protocols that will have IRB and FDA approval in concept for clinical trials to develop treatments for patients with alopecia areata.

Dr. Solomon has served as an Assistant Editor of the JAAD from 2013-2018. He continues as an often requested reviewer for JAAD, JAMA-Derm, and Journal Dermatological Treatment, Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology, and has reviewed for the NEJM.

In addition to his activities as Director of Ameriderm Research, Dr. Solomon continues to see routine and cosmetic dermatologic patients through the Ormond Beach office of ADCS. Dr. Solomon’s cosmetic interest expand to include treatment of leg veins, and helping to resolve acne scarring and forearm solar purpura. He specializes in the evaluation and management of patients with dermatological problems complicated by adverse interactions between diet, behavior as well as skin allergens and environmental toxins. Often these patients have multi-organ involvement and fail to respond to standard of care. Dr. Solomon takes the time and energy to research the individual causes and potential solutions for each of these patients’ complex medical problems.
