Hair Replacement
Dr. Passot, a French surgeon, is credited with performing one of first surgical hair transplantation in 1931. Though not so cosmetically pleasing in its infancy, the procedure was a success. Advance to the 1970s when jokes about “corn rows and toothbrush-like” hair transplants became fodder for nightly talk-show hosts. Today, in the 21st century, hair transplantation has evolved and is performed in such a way that virtually no one--not even your barber or stylist--can detect it. Only the result is noticeable--hair. Improvement in the procedure over the last 20 years has benefitted millions of men women worldwide.
Surgical hair transplantation is the only permanent solution for hair replacement. The culprit that most often negatively influences hair follicles and causes their demise is the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Hair follicles on the back and sides of the scalp are most often resistant to DHT. These healthy follicles are moved to thinning and balding areas on the front and top of the head. The result is a look that is both natural and dense.
The procedure is outpatient, maintenance free and offers a safe and satisfying outcome. The transplanted hair appears in about six-to-nine months and continues to grow---and grow. Hair transplantation can be done in one or more sessions; it just depends on your goal. The Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT) and the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) are the most prevalent techniques used today. Both harvest follicles from the donor site for transplantation to the recipient area.
In order to perform a hair transplant, a surgeon must be both medically proficient and technically skilled. The doctor must also be able to integrate medicine, research, and artistic ability to be successful. Placement of grafts requires knowledge of facial structure, hair texture, age-appropriate hairlines, and the ability to evaluate suitable hair angles and direction. Equally important: choose a doctor with experience, credentialing, and one with whom you feel comfortable.
Dr. Matt Leavitt, founder of ADCS, has more than 25 years of experience in hair restoration surgery. He has lectured both nationally and internationally on the subject, authored several books and textbook chapters and received numerous awards, including the Golden Follicle.
